Throughout its history, St Louis has served as the gateway to
a new life for people of all countries. From the French fur trappers who built the
first settlement here in 1764...to the German, Greek, Irish, Italian, African-American and
countless other people who immigrated or simply migrated to the middle of the United
States in search of a better lifestyle...St. Louis continues to welcome people of all
races, colors and creeds.
Located in the east-central part of the state, the City of St. Louis is bordered on the
east by Illinois. Major highways converging in the downtown area include Interstates
44, 55, 64 and 70 and State Highway 30. The city contains 61 square miles of land
and is the smallest in the state in land area. Approximately 2% of the land is owned
by the federal government. The land surface of St. Louis City is entirely composed
of urban land.

And that's just the City. St. Louis County is divided even further with 90
different municipalities, most with their own municipal governments. Held together
by threads of tradition, the may divers neighborhoods of St. Louis City and County tend to
envelope newcomers, like a warm, comforting quilt. Whatever your lifestyle, we're
sure you'll feel right at home around town.
